House negro franchisees fight harder to defend their franchisor than their masters

And then stony silence.

So much ignorant and sometimes even, sincere, bullshit  shuckin’ and jivin’.

That’s all house negroes and the marginally-committed field negroes do.

The Uncle Toms actually think the master will treat them as well after as before this little “freedom march”.

Master know civil war is at hand.

Scraps from the table are inadequate for 1% of franchisees who insist on being treated as human beings.


Empire of Illusion, Chris Hedges: The Death of God & franchise propaganda

Is franchising an empire built on brand-induced self-delusion?

If it is, then it appears to be just one in our post-modern world where any means justify the economic ends. So says a Pulitzer Prize winner, anyway.

The first chapter (The Illusion of Literacy) starts off with a bang. A quote from one of my favourite thinkers, John Ralston Saul that I’ve mentioned before (1., 2., 3., & 4.).

I especially like his contrary opinions about expertise: see Experts? We don’t need no stinkin’ professionals. Franchise law is an example of the hollowed-out perfection of the expert literate man.

Hedges lifts this quote from Saul’s 1992 book, Voltaire’s Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West:

Now the death of God combined with the perfection of the image has brought us to a whole new state of expectation. We are the image. We are the viewer and the viewed. There is no other distracting presence. And that image has all the Godly powers. It kills at will. Kills effortlessly. Kills beautifully. It dispenses morality. Judges endlessly. The electronic image is man as God and the ritual involved leads us not to a mysterious Holy Trinity but back to ourselves. In the absence of a clear understanding that we are now the only source, these images cannot help but return to the expression of magic and fear proper to idolatrous societies. This in turn facilitates the use of the electronic image as propaganda by whoever can control some part of it.

Case in Point: A new television show named How’d You Get So Rich? features, of all players in this drama, a franchisee attorney (YouTube). This “news” is then picked up the industry-financed social media apologists, not just once, but twice.

Nothing says sincere, honest and authentic in both a visual and journalist sense, as the two words together: Joan Rivers. Celebrity spokespeople have been used in franchising brand management for a long time but sometimes it’s a double-edged sword.

Is this a too cynical interpretation of this type of modern myth-making?

Humble but poor outsider +  scrub toilets + Harvard MBA/law + In Communion with the holy American Church of Franchising = A Saint’s story (millionaire, cars, 2nd wife, fame).

I wonder what the majority of mom-and-pop franchise investors would like to say to Mr. Zarco? Is he their champion of the underdog? Does his story reflect this people’s:

  1. life reality or
  2. is this just another in a long line of cheesy attempts to lure more life savings into a dying empire, noteworthy since this is an unbelievably desperate economic/employment times?

An inspiring story on a marketing and franchising level.

And personally, to me anyways.


Franchising was an imperial Empire

When you think about it, franchising uses a lot of military terms: conquer markets, roll out regionally then nationally, blitz the consumer, attack markets. The very term marketing “brand”originated, of course, with heraldry and military regalia.

Franchising had operated as a type of self-governed nation state that has traditionally been held together by British common law principles.

They acted as if they were above the law.

This ability to exercise coercive power is over, however.

By 1920, see above, the sun never set on the British empire.

An empire is:

a State with politico-military dominion of populations who are culturally and ethnically distinct from the imperial (ruling) ethnic group and its culture. Wikipedia

The franchising elite is what I have defined as Big Franchising: product franchisors, key business-format franchisors (lapdog peak associations), and the franchise bar. If you doubt the transnational of modern franchising methodology, I direct your attention to the World Franchise Council.

Franchising is an imperial empire because it gains its strengths from “domains of knowledge, beliefs, values and, expertise”. Wikipedia These near-religious beliefs are found in full-blown vigour at the International Franchise Association’s continuous cliche-ridden press releases (see SmartBrief).

In most empires, there is a visible difference between the rulers and the ruled such as skin colour, language, education, nationality, ethnicity, etc. Not so in franchising.

The differentiating factor is between the investors’ ears.

Awareness that franchising is a game designed to re-distribute wealth (not create it) is what separates the haves from the have-nots. That franchising is often a debt-induced form of servitude is what the “innocents” have not learned yet.

The British empire held control by exerting a monopoly on sanctioned violence via their military, colonial administration, police and courts. This was possible through misrepresentations and control of information.

  • Franchising has done the same via the franchise bar’s jealously guarded monopoly on franchise legal work and access to justice in the civil court system.

Franchising as a coercion-based empire is over not because digital information can now be shared (internet). There are many digital house negroes actively trying resist the inevitable.

The empire has ended because credible and honest sharing is happening here, a few IndFA sites  and at WikiFranchise.org.

All empires pass away.


Blue MauMau returns false First Opinions

SecondOpinionBlueMauMauBlue MauMau is like a laboratory that provides knowingly inaccurate readings.

How a problem is framed influences very much the potential treatment and outcome. Humans anchor on a conclusion, often inaccurately and that can be used against them.

The cheapest form of dispute resolution is to plant the seeds of hopelessness early on.

I have tried to provide honest reviews personally, here and at WikiFranchise.org in the last 11 years.

I cannot say the same for Blue MauMau (BMM) anymore.

I was absolutely pleased by the range of and depth of discussion at first on BMM. It seemed to offer real hope for a forum of real change.

Over time, I had a gut feeling that things were not what they appeared. I have contributed less and less over time as my private concerns grew.

I first asked on FranchiseFool, Is Blue MauMau Crooked? in September 2008.

  • Curiously, no one from BMM (let alone Don himself) ever asked me why or attempted any defense.
  • I’ve never been afraid of an open debate and have always returned every BMM telephone call I ever received.
  • I found the BMM lack of interest in WikidFranchise.org to be noteworthy also. Dick Gibson from the Wall Street Journal reviewed it but BMM found it irrelevant?

The purpose of BMM is to confuse and misdirect the real causes of franchise failure.  Some directly (Dale Nabors, Bob Frankman, GBeany) shout down any new ideas on a digital platform while others act as apologists. The “blame the victim” mantra is unimaginative. The false near-religion that “pre-sale due diligence can look forward enough to predict and prevent franchisor opportunism” is an insult to any thinking former franchisee.

At best, the attorneys are silent when directly questioned. All three of them don’t seem to have their heart in it anymore.

BTW: Saying that you cannot earn legal fees in a certain jurisdiciton and are therefore somehow less biased is a moronic argument which is notable for its lack of assurance that: I receive $0 for any views or efforts made associated with BMM. What they offering is not legal opinions at all: a legal relationship (fiduciary duty, solicitor:client) does not and cannot exist because their is no contract between the internet reader and the lawyer.

The result is a thin gruel of half-truths, faulty rhetoric, thought-terminating clichés, and political science, served up to cool out the marks by producing a “hopeless situation“: for both individuals and groups of investors.

Maybe the originator of the phrase global village may know a thing or two about how technology is resisted by a dinosaur industry and the profitable delay by its social media contractors.

It is certainly not the first activity that has been captured by a U.S. $1-trillion industry that defends itself by any means available. But I may be entirely wrong in my conclusion that BMM is a digital house negro.

I am happy to debate anyone, anytime, in any credible forum.

Social justice may be found in religion but it is an individual’s choice to turn away.

Levi Coffin (1798 – 1877) was an American Quaker, abolitionist, and businessman. Franchisee associations: House versus field negroes

Organizing a franchisee association is fraught with peril.mousetrapIt can be just another cynical trap for the trusting.

There are three types of groups of franchisees:

  1. unorganized (no groups).
  2. franchisee advisory boards (an obvious lapdog) and
  3. independent franchise associations, IndFA.

Most people think that any type of IndFA is preferable to #1 or #2.

  • They’re wrong.
  • They’re wrong.
  • They’re wrong

The worst type of franchisee organization is an IndFA that gives the appearance of independence but is, in fact, serves their executives’ personal or their advisors’ needs. These I call house negro IndFAs. It’s called deceit and betrayal.

  • They auction off their access to information to the highest bidder: the franchisor.

It should come as no surprise that the IndFA’s legal counsel is the role that becomes the most compromised (credence good cheaters). They make much more money and status from leaking information than they ever do representing franchisees or charging an executive. They can’t help themselves: they could not earn a living playing it straight.

People need to think of themselves as unmanaged, independent and free, if they are to be controlled with maximum success.

House negro IndFAs are there not to solve problems, but to create obstacles to real change. They are charming, they whisper compromises and they will use a leader’s ambition to turn his or her head. They are stuffed with talking heads mouthing words that seem worthwhile but are designed to trick you.

I am a field negro and I only associate with other field negroes: individually and in groups.

I get paid for giving advice, not for making promises that will never come true. I promise nothing except confidentiality, friendship and a chance to live with dignity. I have no “black box” of association management services. There are no advertisements here or on WikiFranchise.org because commercial interests always favour the dominant economic power, directly or indirectly. I do not make ” a very good living”. I do not auction off access to information to the highest bidder. I always make sure the ownership and control of all data is in the franchisees’ hands (not just mine). I do not “manage” franchisees: I work specific projects on behalf of them. The lessons franchisees learn organizing themselves, stays with franchisees.

I am not the most charming person in franchising but because of how I operate, I may be the loneliest.

I don’t bait traps for franchisees: I spring ’em.

Malcolm X on the difference between House & Field Negroes.

  1. House negro -few, favoured, loves master and
  2. Field negro -many, hate master

Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. You don’t need anything else.

When I was born, I was black. When I grow up, I’m black. When I’m ill, I’m black. When I die, I’m black. But you – When you’re born, you’re pink. When you grow up, you’re white. When you’re ill, you’re green. When you go out in the sun, you go red. When you’re cold, you go blue. When you die, you’re purple. And you have the nerve to call me Colored?

It is incorrect to classify the revolt of the Negro as simply a radical conflict of black against white or as a purely American problem. Rather, we are today seeing a global rebellion of the oppressed against the oppressor, the exploited against the exploiter.\

I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produce it, they’ll create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action.

Watch him on a Canadian game show broadcast on Jan 1965 called Front Page Challenge (after Mecca). The minister was slain within six weeks.


House slaves in Franchising

The term “House Slave” is being used lately. It is a term I was unfamiliar with until I watched Malcolm X define it on this animated video.

There were two types of negroes: House and Field.

House: The house slaves lived in the master’s attic or basement, ate what the master ate, wore decent clothes, spoke correctly and loved the master more than the master loved himself. The house negro defended his master’s property, even more than the master did.

Field: The field negroes lived in shacks, ate the worst food and wore rags. They hated their master because of his cruelty. They wished his master only the worst.

I have known many franchisees who I would classify as House Negroes.

  • House franchisees are willing to continually degrade and betray their peers in order to ensure their favoured position.
  • I have only contempt for anyone so weak.

Maybe that’s why field franchisees like me never receive many Christmas cards.
